ABUSE IS NOT STRAIGHT CULTURE
Dear Marvel’s Runaways and Karolina fans,
Because of the rising tensions within the fandom, I have some questions for y’all:
1. What words would you use to describe Karolina and her character? (No, gay and/or lesbian doesn’t count. Think outside the box for a change)
2. How many of you watch the show solely for the fact that it’s adapting a lesbian comic book character into the small screen, instead of the plot?
3. Did you read the comic series in which the show is based on?
It doesn’t matter if you did so before the show came out or after, so that you could get a better feel for the characters, but if you did, you’d know that throughout the first volume, self-discovery is a prominent theme in Karolina’s story arc, and that it manifests in different ways — becoming aware of her alien heritage and realizing that her family is not who she thought they were, which were subjects that were the center of her arc.
Hell, coming to terms with her sexuality was a secondary plot point for Karolina, and it wasn’t fully explored until the second volume. Contrary to popular belief, she didn’t come out overnight at all. The road of discovering her attraction to girls was a long and arduous one, especially when the events beforehand took a toll on her mental health and overall self-esteem. Karolina’s character was the epitome of a coming-of-age story.
The fact that so many of y’all are completely disregarding that and pushing for her to come out early is not only sad, but downright disrespectful to her character. Wanting more representation in the media you consume is one thing, but actively reducing people and characters to just their sexuality is something else entirely, which is exactly what most of you are doing in the tags.
Karolina is so much more than her attraction to girls and instead of hunting down, bullying and sending death threats people who ship your NOTPs, you should take a good luck in the mirror and ask yourselves if you’re really watching the show and staning Karolina for the right reasons. The show has only been on for four weeks and quite frankly, y’all need to chill and take a couple of seats.
Secrets only live in shadows and there are no shadows in the light.
